dwt-Zelte (Dieter Winneknecht Textil GmbH) was founded over a quarter-century ago in 1986 in Germany as a sales company for steep-walled and frame tents. In 1988 the company started its own development and production of caravan awnings. In 1991 dwt acquires Sachsen-Zelte Textil GmbH and launched its own caravan awnings range under the brand of "dwt-Zelte", the name it retains to this day.

Ten years later, in 2001, dwt-Zelte relaunched its brand and started to better support trade distributors. Over the next decade dwt extended its sales to cover the rest of Europe, increased the capacity of its production facilities in Niesky (Saxony) to cope, changed its name again to "dwt-Zelte Niesky GmbH" and founded a subsidiary company "Premium Metallsystems GmbH" to manufacture high quality awning frames.

All this work paid off as in 2008 dwt received the "Caravanning Design Award" for its "Curve" awning, and in dwt-Zelte celebrated its 25th anniversary. From its humble beginnings the company is now a huge success, with annual group sales significantly in excess of £10 million.
