There are many situation when camping or boating that you simply don't need a sophisticated chassis-mounted step and a freestanding step will suffice. A caravan holiday is a good example, and it's perfectly normal to see a freestanding caravan step used for access. The freestanding caravan step may be a single step or a double tread step, and it may (or more commonly may not), incorporate a hand-rail.
