It ensures that the steps are automatically retracted when the vehicle's engine starts. This is a useful safety feature, making it theoretically impossible to drive off with your Techno step unfolded/extended (thus risking damage to pedestrians, step or vehicle) should you ever forget to retract it using the 12v rocker switch supplied with the Techno Step itself. This blog post shows an Omnistep that would have benefitted from a safety relay to automatically retract the step before driving off.
